It's pretty common in Japan for companies to give out small freebies with their products. Usually these fall into one of two categories: toys or household accessories.

For example, Coke and Pepsi often battle it out for who can give out toys related to whatever the current big movie is. Pepsi had Star Wars and Planet of the Apes, Coke has Disney and Pixar movies.

From the other category, my favorite brand of oolong tea (Suntory) has recently been packaging handkerchiefs with 250 ml bottles. Before that it was small, cloth bags. Before that, flower seeds.

This week, at the grocery store, we got a bit of a surprise - Coke is packaging boxes of Kokumaro Curry (solid cakes of curry powder and spice to be dropped into boiling water when making curry) with two liter bottles of Coke Zero. We don't usually buy Coke Zero but with a freebie like that, well, dinner was good.

Last weekend, I made it down to Tokyo Big Site for Design Vesta Vol. 27.

The Festa (festival) is a twice annual art and design event where artists can set up booths to display, promote, or sell their art. Painters, sculptors, musicians, and every other stripe of artist imaginable are all represented in the mess of several thousand exhibitors.

The quality varies, of course, and while there is a lot of talent evident, style choices seem to be a bit limited; many of the younger artists' work were indistinguishable from their neighboring artists' work. Bright colors and abstract expressionism seemed to outweigh any sort of representational work by 10 to 1, and while that is not a bad thing, it did contribute to the feeling of everything looking like everything else.

However, there were a few artists that I noticed (read bought prints from):

Kaoru Kamui - Kamui works in digital art and has been at it for the three years or so since she graduated from university with a degree in graphic design.

Yoshida Suzuka - Yoshida does beautiful watercolor and acrylic paintings of small, quiet scenes.

Taishi Douchin - Douchin does small, fun illustrations with marker and pen on poster boards. Unfortunately, he does not have much available yet, but he is hoping to get a book made soon.

Ko-Hey Harada - Ko-hey has two series of posters out, The Jokers, a group of rock and roll inspired images, and the Marshmallow Kings, a lighter, more romantic set of images.

U-suke - U-suke has created a fun character called Chonmage Kacho (Chonmage is the top knot that samurai warriors wore, and Kacho means president of a company.) There is a book and DVD available collecting the best images featuring the character.

Hotanism - I'm not actually sure of the designer's name. The person at the booth was very shy and would not speak to me. But the website is up and has some interesting stuff on it. I was most interested in Black Rabbit.

Kei Gallery - Again, I don't know who the designer is; the booth was unmanned when I found it. But I love the Chess figures and should they ever market an affordable set, I will but it.

And that was the best I saw. If you have a chance, and if you're a fan of new and independent art, I recommend you check out the Festa.

(Sunday)

Started the day with a coffee klatch hosted by Cory Doctorow. The coffee klatches are just informal round tables where people can sign up to meet with artists and authors and ask them just about anything. It was fun and entertaining; a lot like listening to one of Cory's podcasts.

I met Christiana Ellis and Paul Fischer in the klatch and talked to them for half an hour after. Really good to meet people in real life that I know from the podoshpere. Fun, lovely people who have somewhat inspired me to actualy go ahead and start that podcast I've been thinking about, but more on that some other time.

Then to lunch and back to the art show to see if I had won any pieces. I did, although I did not find out until later. Primarily a nice little painting by Bob Eggleton, one of his Art du Jour pieces, of a dragon that I was quite pleased to get.

Watched a bit of the art auction, wherein pieces that had been hotly contested during the write in bidding went to voice auction. Staggered at a work by Eggleton and a Japanese artist named Sato that sold for $16,000 U.S. It was a nice piece, but still. Anyway.

From the art show to the signing area where I was lucky enough to get both my English version and my wife's Japanese version of The Sandman: Dream Hunters signed by Yoshitaka Amano. Spent the wait in line talking to a very nice Japanese girl who was extremely nervous about meeting Amano. She hadn't know he would be doing a signing and so had rushed to the signing area as soon as she found out; at one point she was literally bouncing up and down with nervous anticipation. She was very kawaii in her fanishness. Amano signed my books and seemed like a nice enough, if very strange guy. Talked to the two American guys who were working there - one as Amano's U.S. Agent and one as a translator. Both interesting guys in their own right. Quite a fun time.

Lucked into another coffee klatch, this time with Michael Whelan, who was charming and funny at extremely cool. He had lots of stories and lots of explanations of techniques and tricks that he uses. Really enjoyed getting to talk to him. The klatch had been a last minute formulation so there were only about six of us there to talk to him, which was nice as everyone got a chance to ask him questions and just, generally, chat. At the end he was kind enough to sign a poster of his World Con image for me, which I appreciated quite a lot.

Made it back to the art show to pick up my winnings. Had wanted to go to a Charlie Stross reading, but by the time I had gotten everything together the reading was half over and I needed to hit the trains. Four hours later, I made it home.

Lovely people at the con, both pros and fans, and just a really good time. Already looking forward to the next one.

(Saturday)

Mainly wandered around aimlessly after having slept in too late to attend the Yoshitaka Amano panel. Tried to hit a panel called "Transcendence or Mundane" about the singularity, but missed that as well due to a schedule mix-up.

Finally made it to a panel called "The Universal Library", all about when and how it will eventually develop. The panel featured Cory Doctorow, Charlie Stross, Patrick Neilson-Hayden, a guy from Google, and a professional research librarian. Interesting and smart; I felt underqualified to be in the panel as I am not an information architect.

From there to the hotel again to relax and clean up before the Hugos.

Hugos fun; George Takei and his translator were good hosts. There were a lot of jokes and back and forth that were funnier if you speak English and Japanese; I didn't feel like there was a lot of good explanation of the linguistic jokes as there were several people around me who didn't understand them. Still, a fun show and some good presenters.

Naomi Novik won the Campbell Award for best new talent, which was quite cool as I'm a big fan of hers.

Went to a party after the ceremony hosted by the Norwegian / Swedish contingent that was a lot of fun; talked to a lot of people. Drank a bit of a Norwegian liquor called (I'm sure I've got this spelled wrong) Aqua vitae. Very similar to whiskey but with a bit of an anise flavor. Good, but very strong.

Lots of cool people; lots of discussion of things relevant and un.

A sign inside the party suite read "Movies (with an arrow); Friendly Norwegians (with an arrow in the opposite direction)". I found it quite charming. Lovely bunch of people. Norway is now very high on my list of favorite places.

Missed the subway again, so walked to the hotel. Again.

(Friday)

Lots more people today. A few cosplayers, but not too many, which is a bit surprising and a tad disappointing. On the other hand, the maid cafe opened today and they're all in costume, which is cool.

Started the day by going to a reading by Cory Doctorow. He read from his forthcoming children's novel "Little Brother" as well as a short story called "Other People's Money". Both were fun, intelligent reads and it was a good session.

The readings are being held in a small room that seats, maybe, thirty people; it was about half full for both Cory and Naomi Novik, who I saw later in the day. This makes for small, intimate readings that are really the joy of coming to cons like this in the first place.

After the reading, I went to watch an art demonstration by Michael Whelan, Bog Eggleton, and a Japanese artist whose name I can't remember and which I can't look up right now. They set up three easels and began taking suggestions from the audience. Mr. Whelan asked a girl from the audience to paint three lines and a kanji. She wrote "悪" which means bad, or evil. Then all three began painting around that idea on separate canvases. Very cool to watch. Taped a bit of it for later review of techniques to try.

Attended a panel about future crime, which was kind of so-so.

The reading by Naomi Novik was quite cool; she read from her new novel, "Empire of Ivory" which will be published later in September.

Then hanging out and talking to some people until it was time for the screening of "World Enough and Time", a Star Trek fan film that is far, far better than a lot of the professional stuff. George Takei (Sulu) guest starred and did a fantastic job. Highly recommend viewing the story.

Then parties. Ate too much, drank just enough. Talked to lots of interesting people. Ate some more. Missed the last subway car and had to walk about thirty minutes to my hotel. Pretty good day.

Now

Last Saturday saw my wife and I returned home from a two week, three country tour of Europe. It was fun, exciting, interesting, expensive, and exhausting. We loved it.

We're now at home, sorting through the accumulated detritus of traveling, organizing photos, both offline and on, piling up receipts and setting gifts for friends and family out of harm's way. We both kept travel journals as we went along and I thought I'd post up some of the basics here, in this blog, while more specific reviews and thoughts may be relegated to places more appropriate.

We left Japan on what I have been calling our Honeymoon, although we have been married for almost two years and have traveled a few times since, on Monday, August 13th, bound for Barcelona and Venice with a one night stopover in Amsterdam along the way.

Amsterdam

We had decided to travel light. Only one small, carry-on suitcase for each of us, with another bag tucked inside for walking around and possibly for carrying souvenirs on the way home. So, once off the plane and inside the airport we were able to make our way to the train station quite quickly. I stopped at the information desk and got directions to the city center, where we would have to change to the tram.

The train was full of students on their summer vacations; backpacks and rucksacks outnumbered suitcases by five to one and camping gear was overflowing the aisles between the seats. We sat in the small space between cars, where some fold-out seats had been built into the walls, and waited for our stop. Which we got wrong.

The journey to the hotel should have taken about thirty minutes. It took us two hours. We stepped off the train onto the wrong platform. We waited for a train that was twenty minutes late. We could not find the correct tram station. We got off the tram too soon. We could not find the hotel and walked in circles for twenty minutes. And then, finally, we found the hotel.

The hotel was nice, the staff friendly, and marijuana smoke could be smelled in every courtyard. Welcome to Amsterdam.

We got ourselves cleaned up and decided to head into the city for the evening, rather than just tuck ourselves into bed at four in the afternoon. We got back on the tram and, better prepared and less flustered, found our way back to the city center. We ate in a steak restaurant, which we thought was good until we got the price. Then we choked a bit. 70 euros for two people for dinner and two cocktails seemed a bit exorbitant. Welcome to Europe where the Euro is much, much stronger than the Yen and tourist season is in full swing.

We decided to walk back to the hotel, both to let dinner settle as well as to explore some of the side streets. We got lost.

Mayumi pointed out a small pub / restaurant near a park that looked inviting and we stopped in to have a drink and get our bearings. It was a beautiful pub. Cozy and comfortable, with real books on the walls in a handful of languages and one of the cutest girls I’ve ever seen behind the bar. (Even Mayumi thought she was cute enough to point out to me.)
Entering the bar we had one of the few moments of culture shock when the bartender spoke to me in Dutch. It wasn’t until then that I realized something that would be a standard feature of our trip: I look European.

In Japan, my wife and I have long been used to stares when we travel in-country as I stand out a bit. I’m about six foot one and around two-hundred eighty pounds; I have light brown hair and blue eyes. My wife is fairly average height and weight for a Japanese woman. Which means, in Japan, my wife looks just like everyone else and I look like no-one except a handful of other Westerners. But, in Europe, of course, the opposite was true - I looked just like everyone and she looked like one of the twelve other Asians we saw on the whole trip. In Japan, no one expects me to be able to speak Japanese; in Europe, people assume I speak the language of whichever country we’re in.

So. I fumbled for a moment, then just spoke the phrase I hate most in the English language: “Do you speak English?”

He smiled and answered yes in a flawless accent and helped us to our table before introducing the very cute female bartender, who spoke better English than I do. I felt like a jackass for not being able to speak Dutch, but at least was able to redeem myself somewhat by translating everything from English to Japanese for my wife.

We enjoyed our drinks and the bartenders were very helpful, locating the bar on my map and showing us how to get to the hotel. I left them a very generous tip and we left, stopping into a local grocery store for a pint of Ben and Jerry’s (we love it and they don’t sell it in Japan) to take back to the hotel room with us. Once again, the staff spoke to me in Dutch and only switched to English after I had to ask.

Although both the bar staff and grocery store staff remained friendly, the mental shift in category from local to tourist was almost palpable. My feeling of being a jackass persisted and I realized it was because I had broken one of my own rules.

I tell students that they should always try to learn the basic phrases of any language before traveling to another country: Please, thank you, excuse me, yes, no, ok, hello, goodbye, goodnight, etc. And I hadn’t done that. Of course I can say all those things in Spanish and in Italian, but I had neglected to even try them in Dutch because we were only going to be there for a single night. Jackass.

One Piece is the story of Strawhat Luffy, a boy whose sole ambition in life is to become King of the Pirates; chapter 3 of Volume 1 opens with Luffy riding a shark, cowboy style, complete with a rope strung between its teeth for reigns. This image, much more than the story, is why I like this manga so much.

My wife, on the other hand, loves the story. She maintains that when I get as far into the story as she has (there are currently 47 volumes in Japanese, vs. 16 in English) I will read for the story rather than clever pictures.

The translated manga is published by Viz media, who have made a business out of finding the more popular Japanese properties and translating them with as much of the original art and format preserved as possible. This includes keeping the right to left reading format of both the book and each page. That said, there are little, helpful hints such as an arrow pointing left and the phrase "read this way" at the top of some pages to help readers adjust to the Japanese layout. There are other fun pages scattered throughout the book, such as the page that teaches you to draw a Jolly Roger and one that encourages the reader to design their own pirate flag.

Volume one serves to introduce the main characters and to get the story in motion. We meet Luffy, the central protaganist, as a young boy hanging out in a pirate bar, listening to the sailors tell stories. Luffy decides that he will become king of the pirates someday, somehow. In the meantime there is a scuffle with some bandits and Luffy eats one of the devil fruit, turning his whole body to rubber with the cost of never being able to swim. (Being made of rubber enables Luffy to use various combinations of stretched limbs to get himself or others out of tough situations.)

Luffy grows up and sets off to become a pirate. In the first volume, he saves another boy from a dangerous female pirate captain and, with the boy's help, saves the world's greatest swordsman from certain death. The swordsman becomes Luffy's first crewman and the story is launched.

The original Japanese story was first published in the pages of Shonen Jump magazine, a weekly that presents the next issues of several different stories in one volume. Shonen Jump is aimed at Japanese boys in the Jr. High School to High School range and the writing reflects this with its themes of friendship and its use of violence to produce humor. The art is, of course, manga style, with all the cliches and must-haves present. Emotion causes huge distortions to the mouths and eyes of whichever character is in the throes of an outburst, while Luffy's rubber body stretches to amazing and inconsistent proportions depending on the need at the time. The art is also brilliant. Clean lines and a minimum of shading are used to keep the page busy without being cluttered and to get the story from point A to point B easily and clearly.

The book is worth picking up if you are a fan of anime or manga, or simply curious as to what all the fuss is about. Priced at $7.95 U.S., each volume is almost twice the price of the Japanese versions, which makes collecting and reading the entire series a more daunting prospect. However, as the English language editions are still being translated, a dedicated reader can take his or her time and pick up new volumes at their leisure.

One Piece has its share of melodrama, absurdist humor, and cartoon violence, all of which makes it a fun, if sometimes simplistic read and I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes next.

Links: Viz Media, Shonen Jump Magazine (English) and my Amazon Affiliate Link for One Piece Vol. 1 Romance Dawn (English).

This entry is cross-posted to Soapadoo.

Managed to get out to my favorite park for a bit of a walkaround last Friday; 'tis almost hanami season and I'm more excited than I should be. Still, a chance to get outside and drink with your friends is never a bad thing, right?
